2006-2007 REGIONAL PARTNERSHIP FUNDING 

Mackay Region covering the eight shires of Belyando, Bowen, Broadsound, Mackay, Mirani, Nebo, Sarina and Whitsunday will benefit from 6,414,790 dollars in Australian Government Regional Partnerships funding in 2006-2007. The funding included Great Barrier Marine Park Structural Adjustment Package assistance of 1,071,002 dollars for tourism infrastructure at Whitsunday Gold Coffee Plantation in the Whitsundays. Regional Partnerships funding will assist in 21,931,466 dollars of new projects for the region.

 

SARINA SUGAR SHED - PROJECT SUCCESS

Sarina Shire Council received 499,000 dollars in Regional Solutions funding to construct a tourism facility housing a miniature operating sugar mill and distillery. The Sugar Shed in the past 12 months has hosted 9000 visitors and since opening has developed its own alcoholic beverages including rum liqueur, butterscotch and mango schnapps and its own ginger beer. Along with this the Sugar Shed has developed a wide of souvenirs ensuring sustainability of the project. This project can be seen as an important catalyst for the region’s tourism industry.

NEW MANAGEMENT AND STAFF MEMBERS AT THE MACKAY REGION ACC Inc.

2007 has seen changes in the Mackay Region ACC Inc. Mr Barry Sheedy, with a strong background in the sugar industry and local government, was nominated as Chair by Minister Vaile in January. In July, Di Rollo was appointed Executive Officer moving up from her role as Project Officer and Chris Bridgett joined the team as Administration Officer.
